Taiwan Golden Horse Awards 2009

Gritty Taiwanese drama "No puedo vivir sin ti" edged out tough competition from mainland Chinese to pick up film and director honors for Leon Dai on Saturday at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards, the biggest Chinese-language kudosfest.

Honoring the black-and-white social drama is a significant boost to local cinema, which is struggling to compete with big-budget blockbusters emerging from across the Taiwan Strait.

The pic, about a single father struggling to keep custody of his daughter, also bagged the original screenplay award.

The Golden Horse awards take place in self-ruled Taiwan and the jury is made up of Taiwanese, mainland Chinese and Hong Kong judges. They judge Chinese-language films from Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and China, including Hong Kong and Macau.

The event also saw former Central Motion Pictures general manager Ming Ji pick up a lifetime achievement award. Central Motion Pictures was instrumental in starting the careers of Taiwanese helmers including Ang Lee, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang.
