Chinese superstar Zhang Ziyi responded to the beach sex photos for the first time in a media interview at the Cannes Film Festival. Speaking almost half a year after the scandal broke out, Zhang said the incident had least affected her.
Paparazzi took photos of the half-naked Zhang frolicking on a Carribean beach with her fiancé in January this year. The 81 photos of Zhang spread furiously on the Internet shortly after it was posted on a website. Seen in the photos, Zhang, who was wearing a red bikini, was doing yoga and strolling along the beach with Vivi Nevo.
Before she laid down on the beach for a suntan, she removed her bra top and pulled down her bikini brief. Her fiancé was seen fondling her buttocks and even "burying" his face into it.
These racy photos outraged Chinese netizens, who criticized Zhang for "embarrassing China".
In Cannes as part of the jury for the short films category on the festival, Zhang told media that the production progress of Sophie's Revenge, the film in which she is both producer as well as lead actress, was not affected by the scandal.
"I am an actress. It is normal for my actions and behavior to be closely watched. But it is also not my fault that certain photos were taken without my permission. Moreover, I did not do anything to harm anyone," she said.
