Jing Wong has a courage to find a girlfriend

Jing Wong

Ever since Jing Wong has debuted, everyone has praised him for having good luck. Not only is he the first to release an album out of One Million Star 3 contestants, he also won an important role in idol drama, “Momo Love”. His popularity is still rising. At the same time, many of his seniors are helping him promote his new album. Yesterday, Show Luo used a glass box to test Jing’s bravery. As Jing’s hand was put inside the glass box, he had to guess what creepy animal was inside!

The four animals included a mouse, lizard, cricket and turtle. Before the game, Show prepared a eye-mask for Jing to wear. He only told Jing that the box had creatures that moved. Jing then became scared; as his hand moved around, he kept on yelping while his senior stood by laughing.
Show laughed: “I actually was quite nice. Since I know that Jing’s most afraid of cockroaches, I didn’t bring any to scare him. I’m not like the colleagues in our management company who wanted to see him touch cockroaches. My goal was to see whether or not Jing fit the ‘OK Man’ requirements. If he is brave, then he has the courage to find a girlfriend!”

When hearing Show bring up “cockroaches”, Jing immediately took his hand out of the box. He said: “The thing I’m most afraid of in my entire life is a cockroach!” After the game, Jing still thanked Show for taking time to support him. Show courteously expressed that no matter how many animals Jing guessed right, he would still buy his junior’s “OK Man” album.
Jing still has one more task in order. He will be dueting with senior Tiger Huang in the beginning of next year. This has let Jing become both happy and nervous for the occasion.

Stefanie Sun comes out to play

stefanie sun

FOR two years, home-grown singer-songwriter Stefanie Sun did not release any albums or have any major gigs.

Since last year, she has been without an artiste management deal after finishing her contract with Warner Music and EMI Music's Capitol label.

When her public appearances dwindled after releasing her album, Against The Light, in March 2007, people began to speculate about her low profile.

Last month, she finally gave her reply in style - with a concert tour.

The Answer Is... Stefanie Sun World Tour 2009 kicked off at Taipei Arena, also known as the Little Dome, on 15 May.

Her second stop is at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 11 Jul.

This 30-year-old told The New Paper on Friday: 'I have done 10 albums, so what's next? What's going to make me happy? I feel that ultimately, everyone will ask the same question: 'Am I doing what I like?'

'And I feel it will be cool to put up a concert. If people want to know the answers, they can watch it for themselves.'

To fulfil her dream, Hong Kong's renowned stage art director William Chang has been brought in as image consultant.

Wing Shya is the concert visual designer.

There will be an elaborate stage design and extensive use of holograms.

Decked in futuristic-themed costumes, including shimmering mini-dresses and wigs, this songbird will also dance in knee-high boots and strappy heels.

She is likely to sing her new song, Fool's Kingdom - for which she penned most of the lyrics - and other familiar tunes like Cloudy Day, I Am Not Sad and Escape.

After being in showbiz for eight years, she wants to do things her way.

One of the most gratifying things she did during her two-year hiatus is to let her hair grow.

'There were restrictions earlier. (The recording label) said the fans were used to my short-hair look, which makes me stand out. But I feel with my long hair, I can still look different.'

By going solo sans artiste management, she said she can also get out of the marketing rut in the industry.

'It's as though there's a template. (To be successful) you have to appear in a certain programme, or give a particular interview. The first song to be released for a new album must always be a fast number. And the second one? A slow ballad,' she said.

Previous labels 'not wrong'

However, she agrees that she owes her current success to her previous labels.

'I don't think they were wrong. We just couldn't see eye to eye on certain things.'

She also pointed out that the companies provide valuable resources.

'They have subsidiaries in China, Malaysia and Singapore. (On my own) I can't possibly have employees in every territory.'

So does this mean she's on the lookout for a new recording label?

'Right now? No. But never say never. It may change.'

She is still planning her new album, but nothing has been firmed up.

She also relishes the freedom to craft her own image.

She said: 'I think it's a personal and never-ending struggle to stay true to yourself. Sometimes, you feel like a fraud. You want people to like you, but you don't want to be Miss Nice all the time.

'For a long time, people have thought of me as the girl next door. I like that. It's nice being accessible. But I think I have already established that, and I can do more than just singing and being sweet and pretty.'

She received rave reviews for her performances in Taipei - despite a rocky start when two-thirds of the audience headed to the washroom to boycott guest star Aska Yang when he came on stage.

The Taiwanese singer had falsified his age in reality singing competition One Million Stars, which he quit.

To date, the celebrity guest list for Stefanie's local concert has not been confirmed - not that Stefanie's Singapore fans care.

By the end of last week, more than 70 per cent of the tickets have been sold. That includes the two most expensive categories - $168 and $148.

Stefanie Sun Fans Stage 'Protest' Against Guest Star Aska Yang

stefanie sun

Singapore's most famous singing export Stefanie Sun's world tour got off to a rocky start in Taipei when two-thirds of her fans headed to the washroom in a 'protest' when guest star Aska Yang came on stage.

The Taiwanese singer was invited to join Sun on her concert tour, "The Answer Is... Stefanie Sun World Tour 2009", which kicked off in Taipei on Saturday. It also featured guest appearances by Taiwan pop princess Jolin Tsai and Mayday frontman Ashin .

The displeasure towards Yang was already evident on the first night of the concert. The lively atmosphere immediately toned down when Sun introduced her guest on stage and soon a small number of fans were seen making their way to the washroom.

On the second night, the number increased ten-fold. Almost 2,000 fans left their seats and headed towards the washroom in a 'protest', resulting in an awkward moment. But Yang maintained his professionalism and remained calm throughout his performance.

Yang first shot to fame in 2007 on the first season of Taiwanese TV singing competition "One Million Stars". He was one of the most popular contestants and was also a hot favourite to win the competition until it was discovered that he had falsified his age. Yang subsequently quit the competition.

Following the scandal, Yang was also embroiled in a contractual dispute with his manager and Sun's fans felt he wasn't worthy of a guest spot on her concert tour due to all the bad press.

Last week's 'protest' has riled Yang's fans who spent over NT$1.3 million (S$65,000) to support him at Sun's shows.

His fans, also known as 'Doves' - which is the title of Yang's debut album - have questioned the behaviour Sun's fans on an online forum saying, "Is this how a host treats their guest? Common sense should still prevail." They then went on to proclaim that they will boycott Sun's albums.

Sun, 31, has claimed that she was unaware of the 'protests' as she was backstage changing.

The Singapore leg of "The Answer Is... Stefanie Sun World Tour 2009" will be held July 11 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Will Fann and Chris settle down in Beijing?

fann wong

Since news of the happy couple registering their marriage was picked up by the Chinese and Taiwanese media, press reports there have speculated that the pair will be settling down in Beijing.

Fann, who only wrapped up filming her latest drama serial last week, could only recently attend to details of her traditional ceremony in September.

She told my paper: "I only saw my three white wedding dresses and two traditional gowns on my ROM day, and took some time while filming to go for our food-tasting and see to some other matters."

Fann, who appeared very happy with her newly-married status, clarified that she and hubby will not be settling down there, but are considering buying a property to facilitate the times when they have to do filming work in China.

It will also allow her to feel at home, and not have to lug around too much luggage each time.

She said: "Whenever I travel to China to work, it's only my assistant who goes with me. When my parents came along once, they liked it very much.

"So having a property there will allow me to bring my family with me the next time I have to go there to work."

Singapore singer JJ Lin's health on red alert

jj lin

SINGAPORE : Singapore singer-songwriter Lin Jun Jie, popularly known as JJ Lin, has been ordered to rest or risk severly damaging his vocal cords.

The popular singer has been suffering a bout of flu since last year and there were times when he even coughed blood. But JJ, 28, did not seek proper treatment and barely got any rest as he was busy promoting his album "Sixology".

It was only when he returned to Singapore to attend the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (Compass) Awards last weekend that his condition got so bad that he had difficulty talking.

According to his doctor, his vocal chords had been corroded by gastric acid and an endoscopy revealed that they were very swollen and badly damaged.

JJ was advised to take at least a week off singing but the ever-professional singer still took to the stage to perform with Singaporean jazz maestro Jeremy Monterio during the awards ceremony on Sunday.

He admitted that the illness has affected his morale and he was worried that the condition will deteriorate, "I am afraid that I might not recover from it. If it worsens, it can lead to a bacterial infection which will then require an operation. That is probably the last thing on my mind as singing is my rice bowl."

JJ's record company, Ocean Butterflies, said it will reduce the star's workload so he can get sufficient rest and recover. However, JJ is still required to perform at ten commercial events in China as these offers were accepted some time back.

The singer's upcoming album which is scheduled to be released in August, is also likely be postponed.

Adding insult to injury, JJ was snubbed at this year's Golden Melody Awards which has been dubbed the Chinese Grammys. His album "Sixology" did not receive any nominations despite positive reviews and JJ revealed that he was a tad disappointed but will not dwell on it.

However, his hard work did not go unrecognised as the talented singer bagged three major awards - Top Local Artiste of The Year, Top Local Composer of the Year and Top Local Soundtrack - at the Compass awards last week.
