Taiwanese Diva Jolin Tsai Gets Excuse to Visit Sabah
The most successful and popular singer in the Mandarin music world was also perfectly fluent answering questions in English at a press conference at 1Borneo Hypermall Friday.
No surprise though. Taiwanese diva Jolin Tsai 's first choice at the Fu Jen Catholic University was to study English Literature. Why English?
"The reason is I love English and I enjoyed speaking English at the time.
So I chose that," she said.
It's hard to believe a pint-sized Jolin commands a fan base numbering millions across Asia, not just in Taiwan but also China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and beyond.
It all started at age 18 when she won top prize at a MTV singing contest with a rendition of Whitney Houston hit "Greatest Love of All."
Universal Music signed her in, releasing a Single "Living With the World" with tremendous success', followed by two albums 'John 1019' and 'Don't Stop' which sold hundreds of thousands of copies each but success dipped with the third and fourth albums.
Sony Music bounced her back to her biggest breakthrough when they signed her up in 2002 and her first single under the Sony label entitled "Spirit of the Knight' topped the Taiwan album chart and sold over one million copies including her hit dance song 'See My 72 Changes'.
Shifting her music to become more dance oriented created a more vibrant image that triggered a meteoric rise in popularity.
Her 6th album 'Castle' topped the charts in many Asian countries, so was her 7th album 'Game' released in April 2005 which topped the charts across Asia including Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
Her output of songs and albums have been so prolific it's easy to lose count of them.
But an event called 'Jolin Butterfly Promo Tour in Malaysia 2009' sponsored by Sports Toto Malaysia and Star Planet Sdn Bhd, gave her a good excuse to visit Sabah for the first time.
"I have very little impression of Sabah to say anything about the place," she said to a question.
"But don't be surprised if I come back for a holiday without any of you knowing it," she joked.
Given such high visibility, it's no surprise Jolin is a hot property for corporate branding exercises and in the case of Sabah, destination branding.
"Jolin is one artiste whom we like to associate with in our branding initiative, in addition to giving a real treat for all especially Jolin's fans," commented Francis Ng, Sports Toto Regional manager for Sabah and Sarawak.
Two rounds of show cases mark Jolin's Butterfly Promo Tour, the first of which was Friday's 1Borneo event followed by Berjaya Times Square KL on June 6, each of which has a one-and-a-half hour concert and a contest to select 100 lucky winners who get to met Jolin up close, he said.
"Whether Jolin knows much or little about Sabah does not matter. The fact that she comes to Sabah means a lot of fans will become aware of this place and follow when she returns to Taiwan because all that will spread through websites," said an Tiang Lai, Group Director of Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, developer of Iborneo.
